Nexus 4 displays red light and won't charge

If your Nexus 4 phone's battery has been depleted and you have not used it in a while, you may encounter an issue where the phone refuses to charge. The phone displays a red light when you plug it in via USB. Sometimes it does not even display the red light

Solution[1]

  1. Unplug the phone from the charger or usb cable
  2. Press and hold the volume down button plus power button for 15 seconds
  3. Plug in the usb cable while still holding both buttons. The red light should start to blink
  4. After 4-5 blinks release the buttons
  5. Wait some seconds and then press the power button and it should boot or display the battery charging animation
