GTA IV has stopped working error

The steam version of GTA IV displays a windows error dialog when trying to play the game. The issue lies with the Windows Live ID sign-in assistant being disabled.

Solution

Simply re-enable the Windows Live ID sign-in assistant service to fix this problem.

Click on Start
Type in services.msc
Scroll down till you see Windows Live ID sign-in assistant
Right click on it
Click Properties
Change the Startup type to Auto
Click Start
Click OK
Start GTA IV

Not working in Windows 8/8.1

GTA IV via Steam installs properly and you can run the social club login dialog, but the game itself will not run. This is because GTA IV relies on Games for Windows Live to run and Windows 8 does not come with that installed.
